Set race day schedule for Porsche Cup

To help end some of the confusion from last race I'm going to have a set schedule for the race day. With so many people involved we need to implement something that would help everyone grid up at the same time.

9 a.m. Registration and Track prep.
9:30 - 9:45 a.m. qualifying/practice.
10:00 a.m. Race #1
11:00 a.m. Race #2

All cars must be on the grid 2 minutes prior to the start of Race #1 (9:58) and Race #2 (10:58). If a car is not on the grid they may start the race at anytime from the pit lane once the field has passed the start finish line the first time around.

My cell phone and computer clock will be synchronized and those will be the timing devices. Perhaps I will bring a clock but the computer will run on it's own and should be the standard. Either way these clocks will be the defacto timing clock and it is solely the responsibility of each team/racer to have the correct time.

I'm hoping this will clear up any confusion as to when and what race is taking place. Especially if it's hard to hear the computer.

Prize winners at the Porsche Cup event.

Congratulations to Mike Long (left), Heather Landefeld (right, just kidding), and Troy Kendall for taking home the JR prize package at our first Porsche Cup race (Anthony Aquila not pictured). Troy for winning the first race, Mike for the rookie drive, and Heather for running a hole in her shoe marshaling for her injured dad. Thanks again to West Valley Hobbies for providing the prizes and supporting our series.

3.24.2007 Road America Recap

Road America Lap Times HTML

What a great day of racing. First off I'd like to congratulate Troy Kendall and Paul Hatfield for winning the first two races in our brief Porsche Cup history. Paul's consistency in the second race was staggering. Huge kudos to our rookies to the series, MIke Long, Kent Ryther, Nicole McCrea, Robert and Colby Yardley... job well done. Racing for 30 minutes isn't that easy but I'm sure you'll all agree that getting into a rythmn is a lot easier. Also the benefit of really sensing how a car can change over an entire run. It is always great to race with Anthony and I know many of you had sweet battles on the track with him as he always races close and fair... at least when he's not cutting the track by flying off road domes to battle in the next corner.

I will need to make some adjustments to the HTML output. I'm not sure that our membership # or ID# can be used for car# in the race but I will ask the Alycat man. Also it counted our 2 races as "rounds". That could work to our advantage and would declare a "event" or "Meet" winner.

Today's Sponsor

Sorry so many of you left before we could hand out prizes. Congratulations to Heather Landefeld for a job well done marshaling her father's stricken car about 1,000 times. For her efforts she was awarded a JR Radio field chair. Troy Kendall won a JR travel mug and a very nice one I might add for his winning the first Porsche Cup race and adding a 3rd place to it. Last was a JR hat to Mike Long for Rookie of the Day. The series will also award prizes with some of the funds and our first prize is a set of new Sorex "shoes" for Anthony for racing hard with circa 1996 Losi -White dot tires. Great job everyone and thanks for coming and breaking the proverbial bottle of champagne on the hull of the 2007 Porsche Cup series. Thanks again to our series sponsor West Valley Hobbies for providing the great prizes courtesy of JR.

Road America - Circuit Map

The track is just over four miles long and consists of fourteen turns. The track has many elevation changes, along with a long front stretch where speeds approaching 200 mph may be reached. One of the best known features of this course is a turn on the backside known as "the kink." Many cars have prematurely finished their race on this section of road and solid concrete retaining wall.

History of Racing at Elkhart Lake

In the late 1940s, road racing was gaining popularity, owing to the post World War II economy, and the influx of sporting automobiles. The Sports Car Club of America was the main organizer of these races, and in 1950, the Chicago Region SCCA and the Village of Elkhart Lake organized the first road race at Elkhart Lake.

The 1950 circuit start-finish line was on County Road P. Competitors went north to County Road J, then South into the Village of Elkhart Lake, and West on what is now County JP (then called County Highway X), and reconnected with County Road P for a total distance of 3.3 miles.

For the next two races, in 1951 and 1952, a different course was used. It was 6.5 miles long, on County Roads J, A, and P. To date, one may still drive most of the original courses.

Private Road Course

After the tragedy at Watkins Glen in 1952, where a twelve year old was killed, the U.S. ruled to discontinue contests of speed on public highways. This was a major blow for competition auto racing and brought the end of a long-standing tradition. This did not permanently stop road racing, however, it did shift it to private courses. In 1955, Cliff Tufte started what is now known as Road America, in a configuration that has changed little over the past 50 years. The addition of Road America as a private track meant a transition from racing through the streets of tiny Elkhart Lake to racing on a big, wide, dedicated race track.

Racing at Road America

Many different racing series have had the occasion to race at Road America. The first was the Sports Car Club of America on September 10, 1955, but they were hardly the last. [1] Other notable series have included NASCAR in 1956, CART from 1982 until the present [2], ALMS from 2002 to the present, Grand-Am, USAC, CanAm, Trans-Am, IMSA, and AMA. Road America also holds a variety of vintage racing events, including the Brian Redman International Challenge.

Exciting GT2 finish at Sebring!

At last! The final lap of the 12 Hours of Sebring has been posted on YouTube. Now you can follow the jump to watch the unbelievably exciting last-lap GT2 showdown between Flying Lizard's Jorg Bergmeister, driving one of the team's new Porsche 911 GT3 RSRs, and Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo in his team's Ferrari 430GT. The video starts as the final lap begins, with Bergmeister trailing Melo byjust half a second after twelve full hours of racing. Both cars were equipped with on-board cameras, so the coverage is simply fantastic. We can watch this all day and never get bored.

viii. Pitting

For all Porsche Cup drivers. **Please read carefully.**

Drivers must exercise caution when entering or exiting pits so as not to cause damage to cars, scoring tower, participants, or spectators.

Drivers are responsible for all the mandated elements of the pit stop. Failure to comply will result in disqualification. Each race has one required pit stop. In order to comply with a complete battery change the following elements must be performed before the race begins and at the stop:

1. The starting battery or battery number one must be clearly wrapped on the end with red electrical tape. This red tape must be visible through the front windshield. Before the race begins a cursory inspection will be made to insure the red battery is in the car. Anything else will result in disqualification.

2. Place the “pit-stop” tape on the driver side or rear window. This is a simple 3m “sign here” arrow tape that must be removed only during the pit stop.

3. The second battery or battery number two must clearly wrapped on the end with green electrical tape. This green tape must be visible through the front windshield.

4. At the end of the race all cars will line up on the starting grid for a quick visual inspection. Pit stop tape tabs must be removed and the green battery must be in the car. Anything else will result in disqualification.
