Some very cool news...
Kevin in Shreveport, LA is starting a Porsche Cup Series. They sound a lot like our club when it started back in 1999. Couple of die hards in the parking lot starting a racing series to start having fun again. Kevin is also old school 1/12th scale which puts him shoulder to shoulder with our club. Kevin has our total support and we'll be very interested to hear how the series is going and growing. Please post your comments here so our members in SLC can help in anyway.
Frank in Coral Springs, FL is also starting a Porsche Cup Series. This is a very nice facility and club that will be racing several classes with PCS being one of them. They have a permanent driver's stand so they are looking at adding reverse to their Porsche's. They will also be on super sticky asphalt as the 10th scale gas cars like it best on molasses. So they will look at adding some horsepower to their rides as a fully prepped track can suck the life out of a silver can 540. Frank & Co. has out full support and please post comments here to let us know how your facility and cars are running under the Porsche Cup banner.
Now for some commentary...
It will be very interesting to see if this concept of one-make Porsche Cup can make it on a national level. It wasn't intended but the exposure on RC Tech helps to get new ideas out to the r/c racing public. RC Tech and other threads are full of on-road racers complaining about cost, time, and a general lack of fun. The secret is to simplify everything. But how does one break away from the masses are too attached to what the standing sanctioning bodies tell them is racing. And why not when the heroes of every magazine is full of national and world championship winners. Some used to be my favorite drivers too but then the closer you get to them you realize it is all a big game. The game is to win, make money, and see the product line explode with your name on it. Trinity played this game really well with Kinwald for example.
HPI is behind the idea of scale racing. With their help we could see ASERS and Porsche Cup explore new formats and chassis/motor/battery combinations that would keep racers racing at the club level for a long time. Tamiya Japan on my recent visit really embraces the idea of one-make racing but I think the trends in Japan is what concern them the most. The rest of the energy is put into winning in the uber-competitive TC championships. I wouldn't be surprised at all if HPI becomes the leader in scale racing events. Manufacturer support is what ASERS and Porsche Cup would need to grow on a national/world level. That would be fun to see but it's not the focus of our series here in SLC. Porsche Cup is for you the racer to start having fun again. That is its purpose. It is to challenge you to race well for two 30 minute races, to squeeze the most out of the car on a given day, and to provide a racing experience full of passing, running in traffic, and to keep that concentration level up for an extended period.
Thanks for supporting Porsche Cup. We will post a new weekday race soon. The date will fall sometime between the 4 hours and the WVH Cup.
